The imposing Wenckheim Castle in Szabadkígyós will soon be open to the public.
The Wenckheim Castle, renewed and upgraded as a tourist attraction within the framework of the National Castle Programme, will be open to visitors from 10 am on Sunday, 20 March, after the official opening ceremony, Helló Magyar reported.
Wenckheim Castle, Szabadkígyós
The castle is Eclectic and Neo-Renaissance in style.
A building of unparalleled beauty, it has as many windows as there are days in the year, as many rooms as there are weeks, and as many entrances as there are seasons. The castle was built between 1875 and 1879 to the designs of famous architect Miklós Ybl, and the park was created at the same time.
The main building of the castle covers an area of around 1,700 square metres, with more than 6,000 square metres of floors, of which around 4,000 will be renovated.
The castle in Békés County was consecrated on 19 July 1882.
Thanks to Count Frigyes Wenckheim and his wife, Count Krisztina Wenckheim, the most modern and luxurious castle of its time was built, and it is still admired today. The construction of the park, which also became a local landmark, began at the same time as the construction of the building. The castle park has been a nature reserve since 1954.
Interestingly, the wealthy Wenckheim family built a palace in Budapest in 1889 near Kálvin Square, and today, the magnificent building is home to the Ervin Szabó Library of Budapest.
The family lived in the castle until 1944, and from 1945 until 2011, an agricultural school was run within its walls. Major renovations had been carried out, but the castle, which is now empty, was in need of a complete renovation, which began on 10 April 2020 and is scheduled to last until spring 2022.
During the renovation, the castle was not open to the public, but the castle park was, from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.
“Visiting the Wenckheims” will be the first exhibition following the renovation.
The castle will be open to visitors from Sunday 20 March 2022 at 10 am.
Opening hours: Monday: closed, Tuesday-Sunday: 10-18
